Daily Physical Education

We receive daily PE here at Cascade Heights! Our PE curriculum is the SPARK curriculum. You can find a link to the SPARK website under PE websites to your right. This is a researched based Physical Education Curriculum that helps promote the importance of movement to all children. Please take a minute to look at the website. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

There are three components to each day for all the classes here at CHPCS. They are modified and changed for each age group and work different NASPE Standards, depending on their grade. The components are:

  • ASAP (Active as Soon As Possible): This is a quick 5-7 minute game or activity that gets the students moving quickly. The students know how to do each ASAP and start on it once they come into the class!

  • Fitness Component: This is a 7-10 minute activity that works on one of the five fitness components (cardiovascular endurance, muscle strength, muscle endurance, flexibility, and body composition).

  • Skill/Game Component: This is a 15-20 minute activity that works on a specific skill related to the unit we are studying. The students usually learn how to perform a skill, practice it, then us it in a modified game.

Pictures are taken from each of the components for each class. Please let me know if you have a concern about pictures or any picture I post on the blog.

Week 4

This week was another successful week in PE here at CHPCS! Students are getting active each and every day and I can already see their endurance increasing! They are participating longer, more efficiently, and with much more effort. I have included some great discussion questions and activities under your child's grade level below. Please enjoy the pictures and have some great discussions this weekend!

K-2

This week we introduced levels! The students learned many animal movements that forced them to move in many different levels (high, medium, and low). Now that they are beginning to understand spacial awareness in a variety of situations, we are going to move to body awareness! Below is a list of questions and activities you can do with your children this weekend!

  • Ask them the difference between a dog crawl and a bear crawl.

  • Have them show you a three-legged dog crawl.

  • Ask them the difference between a locomotor movement and non-locomotor movement.

3-4

This week we started our flying disc unit. This unit is a great unit to start off because everyone is usually at the same level. We will be learning the backhand throw, forehand throw, three different ways to catch, many modified games, and end with Ultimate Frisbee! This is a great lifelong skill to have that can be used anytime and any place! Feel free to do some of the activities below.

  • Ask your child(ren) what the original name of the Frisbee was.

  • Let your child(ren) show you their best throws and catches.

  • Ask them where the name "Frisbee" came from.

5-8

Congratulations to all the students who received the National Award for the Presidents Fitness Challenge! Go Falcons! We will be taking the Presidents Fitness Challenge three more times this year. Each student created a S.M.A.R.T. Goal this week from their Presidents Fitness Challenge results.

This week the middle school classes also started on the Flying Disc unit. We are working on a variety of catches and throws and will build up to Ultimate Frisbee and Disc Golf. They had some great keep away games this week! Their catching and throwing skills are getting better and better each day! Try one of the activities below this weekend!

  • Ask your child(ren) what their Presidents Fitness Challenge goal is.

  • Let them show you their catching and throwing skills.

  • Try to see if they can catch a flying disc three different ways.

Have a great weekend Falcons!

8th Annual CHPCS
Harvest Festival
October 17, 2013

Join the CHPCS community for a fun filled evening of free family frivolity.

The Harvest Festival is a chance for CHPCS families and friends to get together and celebrate the turning of the season with music, games, and a baking contest. Hay rides, pumpkin ring toss, face painting, tug o war, and needle in a haystack will keep the young and old entertained for hours. The fun begins at 6:00 p.m. and ends at 7:30 p.m.

Are you a baker? Are you the keeper of Great Granny’s apple pie recipe? Now’s the time to put on your chef hat, dust off your apron, and whip up your favorite apple or pumpkin themed recipe!  The baking contest is open to all adult/child pairs. Baking with children is not only fun, but is great math practice and provides one on one time that encourages open communication. All baking entries are due on October 17th no later than 3:30 p.m. for judging. After ribbons are awarded, the baked goods will be sold at the Harvest Festival for $1.00 a piece. To enter, fill out the form below and attach it to the BOTTOM of your entry!

Week 3

What another great week! The students are starting to get into the swing of things. The transitions can be challenging at first, but we are all showing great improvements. This was our last week of cooperative games. Each class really showed their strengths in working together to accomplish a goal. We were all surrounded by positives! Please enjoy some of the PE pictures below!

K-2nd

We continued to work on spacial awareness and locomotor movements this week as well as cooperative games. We introduced a number of animal movements such as the bear walk, crab walk, kangaroo hop, and frog bounce! Teamwork was key in many of the activities we did such as Landminds and Musical Shapes! Communication, partnership, and positive attitudes were all encouraged!

3rd-4th

We really focused on communication and teamwork activities. We learned a couple more complex locomotor skills such as the three-legged dog and grapevine. Please ask your students to show you each of the activities this weekend! The students really had to talk to each other and find a common goal while participating in Houdini Hoops and Knots. Throwing in many challenges made them have to be quick on their feet, and ask questions. It was great to see all of their minds get challenged and their faces light up when they were successful.

5th-8th

What a great day to run the mile! The students all came to class prepared and excited to get outside and show me how much they have grown in running! It was great to see so many students excited to run! We had some great mile times today from all of our students. They worked hard and deserve a nice relaxing night! Great job Middle School!

Have a great weekend Falcons!

Mile Run!!!

5th - 8th grade will be running the mile tomorrow! We have been preparing ourselves this week by doing some pacing activities. We also went over the importance of warming up before we run or do any type of exercise.

Students may change their clothing for the mile, and bring music. However, they must follow specific rules:

  • Shirts must have sleeves (short or long), no cuts

  • Shorts or pants must be athletic gear (soccer, running, basketball, workout, etc.)

  • Clothing must be appropriate and can NOT have inappropriate logos or writing on them

  • Teachers may ask students to change back at any time if they feel a rule is being broken

  • Student must change before leaving PE to go back to class or to car line

  • Music players must not be used until the mile starts, and must be put away once the mile ends

Please do not forget:

  • Your running shoes

  • Your water bottles

  • Your smiles

  • Your quick feet!

It is going to be a great day for running!

See you tomorrow!

Week 2

We had a great week of Physical Education this week! I always start my year off with the cooperative games unit. This brings the students together. It helps them work on teamwork, sportsmanship, and accomplishing a goal with partners. It is a great unit to start off the school year with! Each class did a fantastic job and they all had fun with the challenges. We will be continuing this unit next week! Please take a look at some of the pictures of the students participating!

K-2nd

Along with our cooperative games, we worked on spacial awareness and basic locomotor movements such as jogging, skipping, galloping, and speed walking. The students practiced getting to their home-base (own personal space in the gym) as well as demonstrating their ability to perform the locomotor movements in Cookie Monster!

3rd-4th

We had some great participation in our ASAP's (Active as Soon As Possible) this week. The students got to choose many different locomotor skills to get their bodies warmed up. Some of the popular ones were crab walk, skipping, side slide, and the three legged dog.

We also had some great performances in our twist and tuck cooperative game this week. Each class had to break up into groups of 4-5. They all worked on cooperatively passing a ball to each other by twisting and tucking. Then they had to create a routine using the skills practiced. It was great!

5th-8th

We had fun this week getting to know each other with some great cooperative games. We had the most fun with team juggling. Each group had to try to juggle a hacky-sack. When they were successful with one, they went to two, then three, then four, and some even made it to five!

We also started our Fitness Testing this week. The students complete five fitness tests (curl-ups, push-ups, shuttle run, sit and reach, and the mile run). Their scores are recorded and they are used to create yearly goals. Students enjoy seeing their progress in each test as the year goes on. It also helps them set their own personal goals outside of school. They can see what test they want to increase in, and work on that outside of school!

Week 1

What a fast and crazy first week of school! The learning intentions for this week were class procedures, class expectations, class standards (NASPE), and class communication. I made sure the students did NOT sit in the gym while I lectured to them the entire time. We got moving and started learning! At our first All School Assembly (ASA) we sang the Falcon Chant (Falcon 5) and the Falcon Fight Song! Ask your child to sing them to you!!!

National Association for Sports and Physical Education

Falcon Chant!

 Falcon Fight Song!

See you all next week!

"A Healthy Mind and Healthy Body Equals Self-Confidence!"

Welcome back to all the CHPCS families and all the new CHPCS families to another great school year! It is time to emphasize the importance of physical activity in your child's eduction which is vital to his or her health, wellness, and academic success!

Children should receive 60 minutes of physical activity per day! They should get this in a variety of ways including, but not limited to, Physical Education, sports, dance, exercise, swimming, snowboarding, surfing, biking, hiking, and much more.

This year I will be continuing the monthly PE Newsletters, as well as posting what is being covered in your child's Physical Education class. Keep your eyes pealed for a PE calendar that will include many physical activities being held in the community! Make sure you visit the school website as well as the PE blog as I will constantly be adding new material throughout the school year!

The childhood epidemic will improve only when good health and nutrition are seen as keys to helping children succeed in school rather then something that takes away from learning time
