Week 15

What a fun and energetic week!

This week we ended our hockey unit for all the class and moved to some fun and energetic games. The middle school classes did their 2nd fitness testing of the year and from what I can see, many of them improved. If you are interested in your students scores on any of the tests, please do not hesitate to e-mail me anytime.

There were many sick students this week. If a middle school student was unable to complete all five of the fitness tests, please encourage them to work on their push-ups, crunches, jogging, and flexibility over the next two weeks.  I will be pulling many of them and testing them in the morning of the first week back.

Have a fantastic winter break and remember to keep running!!!!

Week 14

We continued our Floor Hockey Unit this week. The students have really been enjoying this unit. It is something new, fun, and makes each person have a chance to succeed in an activity they do not do much at home! It is close to winter break and we all can feel it. Please help remind your students that we need to keep following the school rules and procedures to make sure we head of to break on a good note!

K-2

We moved to more challenging activities this week. We practised our hockey dribbling skills and ball control in a variety of modified games. We then moved to shooting and passing with some partners. The students really enjoyed challenging themselves in each drill we did. We finished the week with "hockey tag", which really got the students moving!

Things you can ask/do with your child(ren) this week:

  • Play hockey in the driveway.

  • Let them show you their ready stance.

  • Pass a ball back and forth with some hockey sticks.

3-4

This week we moved toward playing modified hockey games. We put our dribbling, ball control, passing, and shooting skills to the test in a variety of games. We played "sideline hockey", "hockey tag", and "4 on 4 hockey". The students were able to really show what they have been learning the past couple of weeks. We had a couple hockey injuries, bumps and bruises, but we all survived the week with smiles and a new look on hockey!

Things you can ask/do with your child(ren) this week:

  • Watch a hockey game.

  • Play a hockey game with some friends.

  • Create your own hockey stick.

5-8

We started our hockey tournament this week. The students are showing great sportsmanship and teamwork. They have been practicing their ability to sub into a game quickly without the game stopping. They have it down to a science. It is amazing to watch them all sub in for their team without any confusion, hassle, or arguments. They work together, play together, and help each other out. It always puts a smile on my face to see students working hard in a game/sport and having so much fun. I heard so many students say "great day in PE", "that was so much fun", and "thank you Mr. Weaver" while they walked out of the gym this week!

Things you can ask/do with your child(ren) this week:

  • Watch or go to a hockey game.

  • Play hockey with some friends.

  • Go ice skating at Lloyd Center.

Have a great week and remember to keep moving!!!!!

2nd Grade Book Book Swap!

Second grade is organizing a book swap for Cascade Heights.  Bring in books you have outgrown and trade them for new-to-you books.  Be sure to get your adults' ok first!

Bring books December 11, 12, 16, and 17.  You will get a ticket for each book.  Bring your tickets on December 17, and 18 to pick out new books.  The class that brings in the most books gets to go first.  Bring your books first thing in the morning to the Uniform Closet.

If you have questions, ask a second grader!

Week 13

Congratulations to all of those students who made it to the Elks National Hoop Shoot Free-Throw Contest. All of our Falcons did a great job and made many free-throws under pressure! Next year I would love to see more Falcons there competing for the grand prize. Remember, you gotta make your free-throws! :)

Due to Thanksgiving week being such a short week I did not include it in our weekly posts. Some classes didn't even have PE due to completing class projects and putting on classroom events. It was a great week all-together and those classes who made it to PE had a wonderful time playing many fun cooperative games. We ended our volleyball unit and just had a great time moving around in PE before our break!

Last week we started our Floor Hockey Unit. The students really enjoy this unit because it is a fast paced sport that they do not get to play very often. This means we need to spend more time working on skills and making sure everyone understands the rules and how to be safe. Many injuries can take place during the Floor Hockey Unit so it is very important to understand the rules and make sure each student can successfully, and safely do the skills needed to play in a game.

K-2

We have been working on manipulating objects in our basketball unit. Now that the students have learned how to dribble, chest pass, bounce pass, shoot, and play in many modified games, we are moving into floor hockey. They will get the chance to try and manipulate an object using another object now. It is more advanced, but we are ready for the challenge.

We started with the proper grip on the hockey stick, then practiced moving around with a hockey stick in our hands. The students did a great job with this. The grip can sometimes be a little challenging for students, but our Falcons were able to pull it off! Once they were able to move with the hockey stick we worked on ball control and dribbling. The students got to play games like "hockey tag" and "hockey-hoopla" to work on their skills.

Things you can ask/do with your child(ren) this week:

  • How do you grip your hockey stick?

  • Use a hockey stick or broom to dribble a ball around.

  • What is the end of the hockey stick called?

3-4

We started our floor hockey unit last week! The students really like this unit, especially since it is so cold outside and it keeps us inside :). The students moved very quickly through the grip, stance, ball control, dribbling and the push-pass this week. We are trying to get them to dribble more in game settings. They tend to just get the ball and hit it down the court. We played "hockey-hoopla" and "hockey offense/defense" to work on our ball control and dribbling skills. This week we will get to shooting and some more modified games.

Things to ask/do with your child(ren) this week:

  • How do you trap a hockey ball?

  • What are the cues to a push-pass?

  • Can you use your feet/ice skates in hockey?

5-8

Many of the students in the upper grades remember some of the skills we learned last year. This makes it easy to go over them and move on quickly. Many students are helping other students out who do not know the skills as well! We have went over the grip, ready stance, push-pass, ball control, and using your body when protecting the ball. The students have done a great job demonstrating their skills in drills and in many modified games. We ended the week with "sideline hockey" which introduced them to 4 on 4 hockey and got them to practice subbing in and out of games. We will continue working on this so that we can get into our hockey tournament this week!

Some things to do/ask your child(ren) this week:

  • Pass a ball back and forth with some hockey sticks (or something similar).

  • What are the cues to a push-pass?

  • Watch some hockey on youtube and watch the ball control.

Have a great week and remember to keep moving!!!!!

Week 12

We made it through another successful week in PE! Great job Falcons! Our days are going faster and the students are really getting into the routine of things. They are even coming up to me and reminding me of things when we are out of routine. It is great to have so many helpers! Next week will be a short week, so we will have some fun activities for each grade!

K-2

We really worked on our shooting this week. The students really enjoyed playing "clean your backyard" and "hoop points". We did a fun fitness games called "poison" this week that the students really enjoyed. We talked a little about poison (cleaning supplies) and how they are bad for the body. The students got to shuffle around the gym with a hula-hoop, trying to tag other as they shuffled too. Thank you for taking the time to help them with their basketball skills over the past couple of weeks. Many are improving and doing a wonderful job.

Things you can do/ask your child(ren) this weekend:

  • What are the cues to shooting a basketball?

  • How do you get the basketball to go really high? What cue do you have to change?

  • Let your child(ren) show you their shot at the neighborhood park.

3-4

This week we worked on some of the rules to volleyball. We learned who serves the ball, how the team rotates, and that you can play a ball off the net. All the students had the chance to serve a number of times, as well as play in the modified games. They would get really excited when they had a good serve that made it over the net! We also introduced the "dig". Many of the students would not go for the ball when it was low. They would just catch it and we would have to start over. Once I explained what a dig was, all the students started going for the ball all the time. It was great!

Things you can do/ask with your child(ren) this weekend:

  • Who serves the ball in volleyball?

  • How do you rotate positions?

  • Watch your child(ren) perform a "dig" when going for a low ball? Please make sure you are in the correct space to do this :)

5-8

We ended our volleyball unit with a volleyball tournament. Each class created their own even teams and played each team twice this week. When a team was not playing, they were talking strategy with their team so they can succeed when they got on the court. I saw each team grow in their positive sportsmanship, teamwork, strategical planning, and their communication on the court. Their ability to apply the skills learned (bump, set, serve) in a game setting (NASPE Standard 2) challenged many of them. We even experienced some great positive combativeness at the end of the tournament. It was getting pretty loud in the gym!

Things to do/ask your child(ren) this weekend?

  • Play a game of volleyball with them and their friends.

  • Go watch a high school or recreational volleyball game and see if you can name the skills they perform.

  • See if their are volleyball leagues around your neighborhood that you can join.

Have a great weekend and keep moving!!!

Week 11

This was a short week in PE. Not having school on Monday really made a difference on how the week went. We had to try and get all the material packed into three days. Yikes! We all worked hard and did a great job! Each class was successful and did a great job with all the activities!

K-2

We continued our basketball skills. We moved from dribbling to passing. This was a challenge for many students. I make sure they focus on the cues needed to perform a successful pass. They did the chest pass and the bounce pass this week. We ended the week with some "monkey in the middle" and passing challenges. They all had a great time and really increased their skills. Next week we will move to shooting and some modified basketball games!

Things you can ask/do with your child(ren) this week:

  • What are the cues for doing a chest pass and a bounce pass?

  • What is the difference between a chest pass and a bounce pass?

  • How many chest passes and bounce passes can you do with your child(ren)?

3-4

This week we moved toward practicing the serve. We also played some modified volleyball games like "mass volleyball" and "large volleyball" to work on the bump, set, and serve in game settings. One thing that all the students are getting better at is calling for the ball and staying in their position. It is easy for younger students to want to always run to the ball. It is very important that they learn the importance of staying in their position and calling for the ball when it is hit towards them. Many of the students were successful at this. Next week we will learn more of the rules of volleyball and get closer to playing some actual games!

Things you can ask/do with your child(ren) this week:

  • Let them show you a great bump and set.

  • What are the cues to serving the ball?

  • How are your hands and fingers suppose to be when bumping the ball?

5-8

This week we focused on serving the volleyball, playing in many modified games, and learning the rules to volleyball. The classes got the chance to play "king/queen of the court", "mass volleyball", and "large volleyball". They are all doing really well with their volleyball skills. We have great volleyball players. I would encourage many of our students to try out for a volleyball team! The students picked their volleyball teams and we will start our volleyball tournament next week!

Things to ask/do with your child(ren) this week:

  • Bump and set the ball with them.

  • Have them tell you how you rotate in volleyball.

  • Watch some youtube videos of Olympic volleyball games.

Have a great week and remember to keep moving!!!!!!
