Week 12

We made it through another successful week in PE! Great job Falcons! Our days are going faster and the students are really getting into the routine of things. They are even coming up to me and reminding me of things when we are out of routine. It is great to have so many helpers! Next week will be a short week, so we will have some fun activities for each grade!

K-2

We really worked on our shooting this week. The students really enjoyed playing "clean your backyard" and "hoop points". We did a fun fitness games called "poison" this week that the students really enjoyed. We talked a little about poison (cleaning supplies) and how they are bad for the body. The students got to shuffle around the gym with a hula-hoop, trying to tag other as they shuffled too. Thank you for taking the time to help them with their basketball skills over the past couple of weeks. Many are improving and doing a wonderful job.

Things you can do/ask your child(ren) this weekend:

  • What are the cues to shooting a basketball?

  • How do you get the basketball to go really high? What cue do you have to change?

  • Let your child(ren) show you their shot at the neighborhood park.

3-4

This week we worked on some of the rules to volleyball. We learned who serves the ball, how the team rotates, and that you can play a ball off the net. All the students had the chance to serve a number of times, as well as play in the modified games. They would get really excited when they had a good serve that made it over the net! We also introduced the "dig". Many of the students would not go for the ball when it was low. They would just catch it and we would have to start over. Once I explained what a dig was, all the students started going for the ball all the time. It was great!

Things you can do/ask with your child(ren) this weekend:

  • Who serves the ball in volleyball?

  • How do you rotate positions?

  • Watch your child(ren) perform a "dig" when going for a low ball? Please make sure you are in the correct space to do this :)

5-8

We ended our volleyball unit with a volleyball tournament. Each class created their own even teams and played each team twice this week. When a team was not playing, they were talking strategy with their team so they can succeed when they got on the court. I saw each team grow in their positive sportsmanship, teamwork, strategical planning, and their communication on the court. Their ability to apply the skills learned (bump, set, serve) in a game setting (NASPE Standard 2) challenged many of them. We even experienced some great positive combativeness at the end of the tournament. It was getting pretty loud in the gym!

Things to do/ask your child(ren) this weekend?

  • Play a game of volleyball with them and their friends.

  • Go watch a high school or recreational volleyball game and see if you can name the skills they perform.

  • See if their are volleyball leagues around your neighborhood that you can join.

Have a great weekend and keep moving!!!

Week 11

This was a short week in PE. Not having school on Monday really made a difference on how the week went. We had to try and get all the material packed into three days. Yikes! We all worked hard and did a great job! Each class was successful and did a great job with all the activities!

K-2

We continued our basketball skills. We moved from dribbling to passing. This was a challenge for many students. I make sure they focus on the cues needed to perform a successful pass. They did the chest pass and the bounce pass this week. We ended the week with some "monkey in the middle" and passing challenges. They all had a great time and really increased their skills. Next week we will move to shooting and some modified basketball games!

Things you can ask/do with your child(ren) this week:

  • What are the cues for doing a chest pass and a bounce pass?

  • What is the difference between a chest pass and a bounce pass?

  • How many chest passes and bounce passes can you do with your child(ren)?

3-4

This week we moved toward practicing the serve. We also played some modified volleyball games like "mass volleyball" and "large volleyball" to work on the bump, set, and serve in game settings. One thing that all the students are getting better at is calling for the ball and staying in their position. It is easy for younger students to want to always run to the ball. It is very important that they learn the importance of staying in their position and calling for the ball when it is hit towards them. Many of the students were successful at this. Next week we will learn more of the rules of volleyball and get closer to playing some actual games!

Things you can ask/do with your child(ren) this week:

  • Let them show you a great bump and set.

  • What are the cues to serving the ball?

  • How are your hands and fingers suppose to be when bumping the ball?

5-8

This week we focused on serving the volleyball, playing in many modified games, and learning the rules to volleyball. The classes got the chance to play "king/queen of the court", "mass volleyball", and "large volleyball". They are all doing really well with their volleyball skills. We have great volleyball players. I would encourage many of our students to try out for a volleyball team! The students picked their volleyball teams and we will start our volleyball tournament next week!

Things to ask/do with your child(ren) this week:

  • Bump and set the ball with them.

  • Have them tell you how you rotate in volleyball.

  • Watch some youtube videos of Olympic volleyball games.

Have a great week and remember to keep moving!!!!!!

Week 10

Wow! Last week was busy, but so much fun! Thank you for understanding why this post is a couple days old. I want to thank all of the families and students who were able to make it to the CHPCS Annual Sock-Hop! It was a great success and the students had so much fun showing off their class dance. It was a great competition. I will continue to take votes this week and announce the winning class next Monday. If you have not voted for a class, please send me an e-mail with your vote this week. Again, thank you for your continued support!

With the sock-hop, last week was a little different in PE. Instead of the normal ASAP, fitness component, and then skill component, we had to substitute the class dance for the ASAP and fitness component. This worked out because dancing got the student moving quickly, and it worked on many aspects of their overall fitness! The students had fun, I had fun, and I heard many stories of parents having fun learning the dances as well :).

K-2

Along with the sock-hop dance, we continued to work on manipulating objects by introducing basketball skills. The students worked on dribbling a basketball with their left hand, right hand, and a "V" dribble. They did this while standing in one place, and while moving. They all did a great job. Some of them had to use a volleyball instead of the basketball due to the size of the basketballs. They really enjoyed ending the week with "Dribbling Sharks"!

Some things you can ask your child(ren):

  • What are the three cues to dribbling?

  • Have them show you their "triple threat stance".

  • Have them show you their controlled dribble and try and take the ball from them.

3-4

The students had a blast learning their dances. This year I changed all the dances and made them new. Many of the classes noticed and were excited about that!

We started our Volleyball unit this week. This is a great unit because everyone is at the same level. We do not have too many volleyball players at our school. Each skill is challenging, fun, and something new. The students never put volleyball on their "best unit" wall, but once we start they all have a blast.

We focussed on the "bump" and the "set" this week. They had some fun with challenges such as "partner volleyball" and "volleyball wall-ball". Next week we will introduce the serve and start playing some fun modified games!

Some things to ask/do with your child(ren):

  • Practice bumping a volleyball back and forth with them.

  • What are the cues to a bump?

  • What are the cues to a set?

5-8

Like all the other classes we had fun with our dances. These older students really have some great ideas on how to start and end a performance. I hope you all got to see all their ideas on stage. It was great to hear their ideas and see how enthusiastic they were when it came to performing. Stage fright is not too common amongst our Falcons!

We started our Volleyball unit this week. The students seem to not like the word "volleyball", but when we play, it really brings out the smiles. The students are challenged and they really enjoy learning new sports and activities. We do have some great volleyball players in the older grades that really like the chance to shine in their skills. This week we focused on the bump, set, and serve. We played some fun modified volleyball games that really got the students involved and participating! Next week we will focus on the rules to the game, continue to practice our skills, and get ready for our volleyball tournament.

Some things to ask/do with your child(ren):

  • See how many times they can keep a volleyball up by only using a bump and set.

  • Test them on their bumping cues and setting cues.

  • Have them practice their underhand serve.

K-8

We spent most of the time learning our dance for the sock-hop this week. The students really enjoyed moving their bodies to a variety of rhythms. Dancing is a great exercise I use in PE that works on all of the NASPE Standards. Each class was getting a great workout, as well as enjoying themselves and listening to great music. Many of the classes were sad that PE had to end this week because they were having so much fun. I also had many students wanting water. Please help your students remember their water bottles for PE!

There are no pictures this week because the dances are not to be shown to anyone until the Sock-Hop. Please come and watch your child(ren) next Thursday as they perform their dance in front of the entire school!

Things to ask/do with your child(ren) this weekend:

  • Have them show you parts of their dance

  • See if you can do their dance with them

  • Make sure they do not show you all of their dance :)

Remember to keep moving!!!!!
