Week 20 and 21

I hope you all enjoyed your extra 4 day weekend! That surprise snow storm caught us by surprise, but I think we all were able to handle it very well. Thank you to all the parents who helped make car-line run smoothly when we had our 2 hour early release. I hope everyone made it home safely.

The last two weeks were fun weeks in PE. The younger students finished their pickle-ball unit and started their fitness unit. The older students have been doing their fitness unit, as well as learning some dancing (7th and 8th grader)!

K-2

The students worked on perfecting many of the basic hits in pickle-ball. The cold weather made it a little difficult to get outside and use the nets, but we were able to participate in a number of pickle-ball challenges in the gym! The students were a little sad when we ended the unit.

We started our fitness unit last week. They are learning about different types of exercises for the body. We are categorizing the exercises as upper body, lower body, and full body exercises. We will be continuing our fitness unit next week were we will talk about the importance of fitness!

Some things you can ask your child(ren) this week:

  • What is a diamond push-up?

  • How many bicycle kicks can you do?

  • What are three different full body exercises?

3-4

We ended our pickle-ball unit with great success. The students were really starting to show their abilities to hit and volley a pickle-ball. Their ball control, eye-hand coordination, and agility all improved. It was difficult to get outside when the cold air came, but the students had fun with the "volley challenge".

The students started learning the importance of moving and living a healthy lifestyle. We began learning many different exercises for the upper body, lower body, and full body. We have spent some time on the correct forms and what specific exercises work. Many of them are having a great time performing these exercises and putting their bodies to the test!

Some things you can ask/do with your child(ren) this week:

  • Do 25 push-ups (5 of each kind).

  • What two abdominal exercises can you do?

  • What are three different types of lunges?

5-8

The students have been learning about the importance of moving when it comes to living a healthy lifestyle. They are seeing the importance of fitness and understanding why it is important for them to know how to stay healthy outside of school. Childhood obesity is on the rise and with that comes many health issues. Students are learning what they can do to not be a statistic and live a long, healthy, quality life.

We are learning about the 5 components of fitness (cardiovascular endurance, muscle endurance, muscle strength, flexibility, and body composition). We have been talking about the importance of each component, what each component affects in the body, and how you can improve your fitness in each component. We are putting our bodies and our minds to the test and having a great time!

Things you can do/ask your child(ren) this week:

  • What are the five components of fitness?

  • What are some exercises to show/improve your muscle endurance?

  • What is R.O.M.?

7th-8th Grade

The 7th and 8th graders have been learning some dances for their core knowledge units in class. Twice a week they have been practicing these dances. If this is the first time you are hearing about it, please help them practice by letting them teach you their moves. We only have one more week (2 more days) of practice!

I had some camera issues this week so look for pictures on my next post!

Have a great week and remember to keep moving!!!
