Week 5

We made it through a pretty wet week. It looks like it is going to start raining, so make sure to bring your rain jackets, hats, gloves, water bottles, and rain shoes to PE each day. It is also a great idea to bring an extra pair of socks to school, just in case your shoes get extremely wet. You never know when we are going to go outside, and it is always good to be prepared!

K-2

The students are doing a great job with spacial awareness. We are having less bumps, slides, and tags when running in general space. They are becoming successful at moving around in many different areas, doing a variety of skills, and not contacting anyone else! This week we started working on moving in groups. We did activities such as "chase the dragons tail" and "loose caboose" that forced the students to move around the gym without bumping into another group, but also staying with their group. It was challenging at times!

We also started doing relays. The students were extremely successful at correctly participating in a variety of relays. Teamwork, sportsmanship, and relay guidelines were all followed and the students had a great time!

Some questions/activities to ask your child(ren):

  • Have them show you some stretches.

  • Participate in a relay with them using some locomotor movements.

  • Why is stretching important?

3-4

The students are really working on improving their flying disc skills. I have seen so many great throws and catches. We practiced are skills in many games this week including "keep away", "500", and "partner catch". The students are showing their ability to successfully complete the 2nd NASPE Standard! We spent some time on Thursday going over the importance of stretching. Many of the students knew that it was important to do, but did not know all the reasons why it is such a great activity. Remind them that it prevents injuries from happening, gets your muscles ready to exercise, and it increases/maintains your Range Of Motion (ROM)! Yay for stretching!!!!

Some questions/activities to ask your child(ren):

  • Let them show you how to play 500.

  • Play keep away with them and a friend.

  • Ask them why stretching is so important.

5-8

Middle school was introduced to a variety of different activities this week to help them master their flying disc skills. We played "Frisbee Volleyball", "Frisbee Bocce", "Keep Away", "500", and "Ultimate Frisbee". They are all beginning to understand that this is a great life long skill to know and that it can be played in many different ways. We are constantly working on teamwork and sportsmanship in all the activities we do. One thing that we need to remember is that this is not "practice". This is P.E. and we are here to learn a variety of sports, games, exercises, dances, and much more. We have all ability levels and we need to work together to be successful in mastering the NASPE Standards.

Next week the students will finish the Flying Disc unit with the Frisbee Triathlon! Let the games begin!!!!

Some questions/activities to ask your child(ren)

  • Why is stretching so important?

  • Complete 75 catches in a row with a frisbee.

  • Can you throw or catch the frisbee under your leg?

Have a great weekend and remember to keep moving!!!!

7th Annual PTA Jog-a-thon
Monday, October 7th
It's time to begin collecting pledges for the Jog-a-thon!
Each student should have brought home a neon pink pledge sheet. If you can't find yours, extras are in the brochure rack on the wall near the main entry.

This event is the PTA’s primary fundraiser and we hope to have every family participate!  Our first Jog-a-thon was held in 2007 and has been a greater success with each passing year thanks to the participation and dedication of students and parents.  Thank you all for your hard work.  Let’s all get together to make our seventh one the best yet!

What Is the Jog-a-Thon?
On Jog-a-Thon day, students have the opportunity to run, walk, or skip as many laps as they can complete in 30 minutes.
Schedule:
K-2 9:00-9:30 am
3-5 10:00-10:30 am
6-8 11:00-11:30 am

A pledge sheet is a form for your child to obtain pledges for the laps they will complete.  Even one pledge makes a difference in the success of the Jog-a-Thon.  Family members, friends, and co-workers are great sources of pledges.  Donors may choose to make a “per lap” donation, or a flat donation.  We ask that each child try to collect a minimum of $50 in pledges and donations.  PLEASE DO NOT ALLOW YOUR CHILD TO SOLICIT DOOR TO DOOR.

When Do We Return the Pledge Sheet and Money?
Only the filled out pledge sheet should be returned to your child’s teacher by Thursday, October 3th, 2013. Following the Jog-a-Thon, parent helpers will write the number of laps your child completed on the pledge sheet and the form will be returned to you so your child can collect their pledges.  The pledge sheet and the money collected should then be placed in an envelope and returned, clearly marked with your child’s name and teacher’s name, by Thursday, October 17, 2013.  (Any money collected after Oct. 17th cannot be used to qualify for prizes).  Checks should be made payable to CHPCS PTA, and include your child’s name and teacher in the memo.
Please check with your employer to see if they have a matching gifts program and make a pledge that your employer will match dollar for dollar.

Prizes
The class that collects the most money will have a special treat (to be announced) and the top earner from each class will receive an individual prize.

Can We Come and Help?
Yes and please!  We would appreciate your help to mark down laps on the runners' lap cards as they go by, handing out water, collecting lap cards and entering the number of laps on the pledge sheets.  If you can help for any amount of time on jog-a-thon day, go to
or send an email to volunteer@chpcs.org

If you have any questions, you may email volunteer@chpcs.org.
Thanks in advance for helping to make our 7th Annual Jog-a-Thon a huge success!

Daily Physical Education

We receive daily PE here at Cascade Heights! Our PE curriculum is the SPARK curriculum. You can find a link to the SPARK website under PE websites to your right. This is a researched based Physical Education Curriculum that helps promote the importance of movement to all children. Please take a minute to look at the website. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

There are three components to each day for all the classes here at CHPCS. They are modified and changed for each age group and work different NASPE Standards, depending on their grade. The components are:

  • ASAP (Active as Soon As Possible): This is a quick 5-7 minute game or activity that gets the students moving quickly. The students know how to do each ASAP and start on it once they come into the class!

  • Fitness Component: This is a 7-10 minute activity that works on one of the five fitness components (cardiovascular endurance, muscle strength, muscle endurance, flexibility, and body composition).

  • Skill/Game Component: This is a 15-20 minute activity that works on a specific skill related to the unit we are studying. The students usually learn how to perform a skill, practice it, then us it in a modified game.

Pictures are taken from each of the components for each class. Please let me know if you have a concern about pictures or any picture I post on the blog.

Keep moving!!!!!

Week 4

This week was another successful week in PE here at CHPCS! Students are getting active each and every day and I can already see their endurance increasing! They are participating longer, more efficiently, and with much more effort. I have included some great discussion questions and activities under your child's grade level below. Please enjoy the pictures and have some great discussions this weekend!

K-2

This week we introduced levels! The students learned many animal movements that forced them to move in many different levels (high, medium, and low). Now that they are beginning to understand spacial awareness in a variety of situations, we are going to move to body awareness! Below is a list of questions and activities you can do with your children this weekend!

  • Ask them the difference between a dog crawl and a bear crawl.

  • Have them show you a three-legged dog crawl.

  • Ask them the difference between a locomotor movement and non-locomotor movement.

3-4

This week we started our flying disc unit. This unit is a great unit to start off because everyone is usually at the same level. We will be learning the backhand throw, forehand throw, three different ways to catch, many modified games, and end with Ultimate Frisbee! This is a great lifelong skill to have that can be used anytime and any place! Feel free to do some of the activities below.

  • Ask your child(ren) what the original name of the Frisbee was.

  • Let your child(ren) show you their best throws and catches.

  • Ask them where the name "Frisbee" came from.

5-8

Congratulations to all the students who received the National Award for the Presidents Fitness Challenge! Go Falcons! We will be taking the Presidents Fitness Challenge three more times this year. Each student created a S.M.A.R.T. Goal this week from their Presidents Fitness Challenge results.

This week the middle school classes also started on the Flying Disc unit. We are working on a variety of catches and throws and will build up to Ultimate Frisbee and Disc Golf. They had some great keep away games this week! Their catching and throwing skills are getting better and better each day! Try one of the activities below this weekend!

  • Ask your child(ren) what their Presidents Fitness Challenge goal is.

  • Let them show you their catching and throwing skills.

  • Try to see if they can catch a flying disc three different ways.

Have a great weekend Falcons!

Keep moving!!!!!!!!

8th Annual CHPCS
Harvest Festival
October 17, 2013

Join the CHPCS community for a fun filled evening of free family frivolity.

The Harvest Festival is a chance for CHPCS families and friends to get together and celebrate the turning of the season with music, games, and a baking contest. Hay rides, pumpkin ring toss, face painting, tug o war, and needle in a haystack will keep the young and old entertained for hours. The fun begins at 6:00 p.m. and ends at 7:30 p.m.

Are you a baker? Are you the keeper of Great Granny’s apple pie recipe? Now’s the time to put on your chef hat, dust off your apron, and whip up your favorite apple or pumpkin themed recipe!  The baking contest is open to all adult/child pairs. Baking with children is not only fun, but is great math practice and provides one on one time that encourages open communication. All baking entries are due on October 17th no later than 3:30 p.m. for judging. After ribbons are awarded, the baked goods will be sold at the Harvest Festival for $1.00 a piece. To enter, fill out the form below and attach it to the BOTTOM of your entry!
